Hi Tech meets Low Tech --  Knitting, along with other fiber arts  is supposed to be relaxing.  I think it can be -- if you aren't ripping out and cursing your project.  Computer work is not relaxing, but I do a lot of it and at times, I can even be as creative as I am with my knitting and spinning.  Teena came in the other day, looking for yarn for a  new project.  She wanted to knit the Magnolia Sweater from The Knitter, a UK publication.   But she did not have the magazine with her.  Better than the magazine, she had her iPad and an electronic subscription to The Knitter magazine.
Here is a picture of Teena's iPad with a knitting app that acts like a row counter.  There's lots of other knitting apps that you can get.  I'm sold. I've got to get one for the store.

Here's a low tech version of the sweater.  Teena chose Blue Heron Rayon Metallic yarn in colorway Polar Morn and just completed the lace edging on the sleeve. It is really knitting up beautifully.

Jane completed many projects this summer.  First is her Progressive shawl knit out of St. Denis Nordique yarn.  It's her first shawl and she did a fabulous job.

Jane also finished a wallaby sweater -- the first sweater she has knit for herself and it fits!

Janet finished her Wallaby after much fussing.  It came out great!  She's been knitting for less than 6 months and already has a lot of projects under her belt.

Vaughn always amazes me.  She knits, weaves, spins -- anything fibery.  She came in the other day and showed me this beautiful scarf she wove out of Kauni Effektgarn in color EQ.  Isn't it lovely?  Trish tried to give me all the technical terms -- but I can only handle so much information.  The best I got out of it is that the scarf was woven in plain weave.

We had our Microwave Felted Bag class and it was a great success!  We'll be doing another session on Dec. 11th @ 1 pm, so if you missed out on all the fun -- be sure to sign up for this one.  Here are some of the end results.

I hope you have all heard about Creativity for a CauseSponsered by the shops at Mill Race Village and yours truly, Creativity for a Cause's next event is on Saturday, November 13th.  You can sign up for workshops and lunch at the Robin's Nest all in support of "Feeding our Neighbors in Need".  Check it out.  I have been hosting a workshop at Woolbearers since they began doing this -- it's all for a great cause and you'll have a lot of fun too.

Last but not least (I hope) I just have to show off my latest shawl.  Now, I'm not much of lace knitter, but when I saw this new yarn come in I know I had to do something with it.  It's Manos Laceweight -- alpaca, cashmere and silk and it is soo soft and yummy and has been flying off the shelf.  I looked on Ravelry for a project worthy of this scrumptious yarn and found Annis on Knitty.com.

Knitting Brioche by Nancy Marchant is an amazing book, tons of information, pattern stitches and great patterns. She has lots of pictures of how to do various stitches and explains things in a clear and concise mannter.   I love the way this stitch looks.  I have a brioche stitch sweater pattern on the needles.. It's from Rowan Studio 18 called Birch -- it's knit with Rowan's Felted Aran Tweed doubled, so I really have no excuse, but to get it done quickly.

Here's a pattern that I wrote for one of my favorite hand dyed yarns -- Woolbearers' Alfresco.

Alfresco Brioche Cowl

Materials: 1 skein Woolbearers hand dyed Alfresco (200 yards); Size 13 16” circular needles

Abbreviatons:
YOSL1 – Yarnover and slip 1 at the same time (it will appear as if you have made two stitches)

Cast on 48 stitches. Put in stitch marker to note the beginning of round.  Purl one row.

Set up row: *YOSL1 , K1; Rep from *

Round 1: *Knit the next stitch with its YO , YOSL1; Rep from *

Round 2: *YOSL1, Purl the next stitch with its YO; Rep from *

Repeat these two rounds until you have enough yarn to bind off.

Bind off very loosely.

Here are some pix of how to form a brioche stitch.

The middle two stitches are composed of the yarnover and slipped stitch.  They will be either knit together or purled together, depending upon which round you are doing.

Here is a pix of yarn drying, getting ready for the Garden State Sheep Breeders Show which was held last weekend.  I am still trying to recover!  It was a lot of fun meeting lots of new folks and  seeing some "old" customers.  We were really busy, so I didn't get a chance to enjoy the show as I would have liked, but being busy was good too!
Here are some pictures of our booth.  We had a front row seat for the Sheep Dog Herding demos.
I got to introduce my new line of sock yarn --- "Made in New Jersey".  From left to right are colorways "Sunrise over Asbury Park", "Blueberry Bog", "The Oranges" and "Cranberry  Bog" --- all made from a superwash merino/bamboo/ nylon blend.  Below that is "Down the Shore" and "Jersey Girlz" in superwash merino and nylon.

One of our new classes coming up is "Knits Men Want"  taught by Gary Haines.  Here is a sampling of some sweaters that he recently designed.   All the same design, using different combinations of Colorways.  The yarns he used are Southwest Trading's Karaoke paired with Plymouth's Royal Llama Linen  -- he is going to overdye one of them.  Can't wait to see how that turns out.

Kris is a master at putting colors together.  Here is her Crocheted Circle Jacket.  She used all the yarn she got from our "Yarn Tasting" -- lots of Cascade Fixation and some Prism yarn too.  I think it is just sensational.
Katy knit another Andrea Shawl -- this time out of Malabrigo Sock yarn.

Her Owl Baby Sweater is just adorable

It’s hard to believe, but the summer is almost over. Time to get out the needles and start knitting or crocheting again. We’ve been so busy this summer getting all of the new yarns in place and classes organized. We have also completely reorganized the store – you can see all the yarns from any vantage point. Yarn is all arranged by weight and one whole wall is dedicated to all of the beautiful handpaint yarns we have (including Woolbearers’ own). Hope you can stop in.

Baby Alpaca Ampato is a soft, yummy alpaca at 4 stitches to the inch. If you haven't already tried their new Superwash Worsted merino - it knits like a dream. Shroom Hat -- I was wondering what I could knit out of SWTC's Dream Big yarn and saw this pattern from KnittySince I only used  half of a skein, I had enough left over to do something else.  What to do?  Make a neckwarmer to go with the hat.  Pattern?  Something simple -- so I made a seed stitch pattern complete with slip stitched edging -- very simple -- only 7 stitches, but you can certainly cast on more.   I made the neckwarmer about 24 inches long and still had yarn left over.  I think it took about an hour to knit and that was with interruptions.  This is the neverending skein of yarn -- superwash super bulky.  Here's the pattern.
Dream Big Neckwarmer

Materials ½ skein of SWTC  Dream Big, button

Needles – Size 13

Gauge:2.5 stitches = 1 inch in seed stitch

Cast on 7 stitches

Row 1: Slip first stitch as if to purl with yarn in back, K1, p1 for rest of row

Repeat this row for 20 inches

Next row -- Slip first stitch as if to purl with yarn in back, K1, P1, Bind off 1 stitch, P1, K1 , P1

Next row -- first stitch as if to purl with yarn in back, K1, P1, Cast on 1 stitch, P1, K1, P1

Repeat row 1 until there are 24 inches. Bind off. Sew in ends, sew button to correspond with buttonhole

Customers have been busy knitting with some new yarn -- here is the beginning Barbara Jean's sweater out of Stonehedge Fiber's worsted weight merino -- so soft.

And here is Terry's cardigan made out of Punta Yarn's South American Cotton.

New classes coming up -- Microwave Felted Purses.  The class is on Saturday, Oct 2nd.  Hope you can join us.

New Woolbearers hand dyed yarn -- superwash merino, bamboo and nylon -- fingering weight.  Bonnie knit the Nougat neckwarmer by Susanna IC in the colorway Blueberry Bog.

The new Amy Butler, Belle Organic yarn is proving to be a big hit.  I knit the Sycamore Fingerless Mitts from her new pattern book.  (Ok -- so it's only one mitt).  Great yarn to knit with.  Come in and try it out.

Oh that Wonderful Wallaby.  Woolbearers had another wallaby class.  I always like to teach a new technique, so this time I wanted to everyone to learn how to do a tubular cast on.

First thing you do is an e-wrap cast-on with waste yarn. Cast on half the amount of stitches you need. I prefer to use cotton as my waste yarn so it is less likely to stick to the "real" yarn.  Next you take the yarn you will knit the sweater with and purl all of your stitches.

Do 3 more rows in stockinette. Now the "purl" side should be facing you.  Purl the first stitch, then pick up the loop of the first purl stitch you did on the very first row and bring it up to the left hand needle and knit through the back loop. Purl the next stitch and then bring the next purl stitch from the first row up to the left needle and knit through the back loop.  Keep repeating this until all stitches are knit - you will have to pick up the last loop from the selvedge edge.  You now have double the amount of stitches you started out with.
You can pick out the waste yarn anytime after you knit a few rows.  For ribbing, it has a nice professional finished look.  I will probably use this cast on everytime I start a project out with ribbing.
Jackie is hard at work kitchenering the hood together, while Katie's is still on the needles.
Here is Jackie's finished Wallaby, underneath hers, is Clare's.
Clare did a great job with striping hers.   There's one more gal in my class, Janet,  who is working on two Wallabys at once.  We had to do quite a bit of ripping this week, but she's doing a great job for someone who has only been knitting for 2 months and I hope to have pictures of her finished product next week.  I just realized that everyone in the class knit theirs out of Berroco Vintage -- a great superwash yarn, especially since all of these Wallabys will be worn by kids.  Mine (up top) was knit out of Classic Elite's Solstice - a merino/organic cotton combo and it knit like a dream.

I love when folks come in with a project made out of my hand dyed yarn.  It's really special to see these beautiful projects.  I almost feel like Sally Field crying "they really like my colorway".  Joanna is modeling her finished Whisper Cardigan out of Woolbearers' Merino/Silk/Cashmere laceweight yarn in cornflower.  The ribbing is out of Plymouth Baby Alpaca Lace.
This week must have been Woolbearers hand dyed finished project week.  Rebecca knit a feather and fan scarf out of the hand dyed Sterling Silver sock yarn -- colorway Deep Magenta and Bonnie knit a Summer Flies shawl out of of Baby Llama Glow in colorway Colonial Blue
Joanna also knit a Summer Flies shawl out of Plymouth Royal Bamboo
And Katie knit an Andrea shawl out of Claudia's Fingering 55 (merino and silk) with a border out of Plymouth Buckingham

Will's Traveling Woman shawl is out of Blue Heron Sock Plus
Gary's sweater is a top down sweater of his own design.  He double stranded Karaoke and Plymouth Llama Linen for some fabulous results!

Judy is going to be teaching a class for Woolbearers in the Fall. We'll be knitting this lovely modular lace shawl.  I can't wait for the class. She knit this shawl out of Koigu, but I think the possibilities are endless.
